Unlike systems such as Acumatica Visit Site at Acumatica Cloud ERP , QuickBook's Advanced Inventory isn't a true production type app because it doesn't provide features such as work-in-progress and tracking inventory across the production floor.

Then again, it's considerably less expensive than most enterprise resource planning ERP systems that do provide these features. Entering the Inventory module is simple. Both take you to the Inventory Center, which lists the inventory items available and their status. The Inventory Center is customizable and you can easily add reports and other key performance indicators KPIs.

Inventory is also closely integrated with both Sales and Purchasing, as it should be, with Inventory updated when sales are made or when new inventory is purchased. QuickBooks Inventory does not allow negative inventory, but does provide for backorders and flags when you don't have enough parts to complete builds for shipping products. It would be nice to have some sort of inventory forecasting, such as Economic Order Quantity EOQ , but that's a feature usually found in more advanced ERP inventory systems.

QuickBooks is also somewhat limited when it comes to costing methods. But, of more concern is the lack of Standard and Specific Costing. Reporting is a mixed bag.

There are only a few standard inventory reports, though the ones available are useful. On the plus side, it's easy to customize these reports, and Advanced Reporting allows you to generate ad hoc reports as you need them. A nice tweak here is that where lower-end players like Cougar Mountain or Zoho Inventory rely on a separate engine like SAP Crystal Reports or Zoho Reports to do custom or ad hoc reporting, QuickBooks includes this capabiltiy in the base package.

These reports can be saved for future use. Considering the market that Intuit is targeting with QuickBooks Enterprise, the features it contains, includign the Advanced Reporting, custom report formatting capabilities, and huge number of user-contributed reports should satisfy the requirements of many users at an affordable price. That actually brings up one desirable feature Intuit offers that's not contained in the software, namely the huge base of QuickBooks users and professional consultants.

If you have a problem or customization need, then chances are this broad network has a solution for you somewhere and likely one that won't break the bank. There are a few potential deal breakers, however. If you need costing beyond what's offered, such as standard pricing or specific item costing, then you're out of luck. Also missing is any Economic Order Quantity capability, always a nice feature to have in an inventory system. If you need or want these features, then chances are you'll have to go upscale to a true ERP system to find them.

But for many of the multitude of QuickBooks users out there, upgrading to Advanced Inventory and Advanced Reporting will fit the bill quite nicely. QuickBooks Enterprise is certainly a viable option for existing QuickBooks users who feel they are outgrowing the version they currently use. It's a painless transition, with familiar menus and an easy upgrade path. However, compared to the other apps I reviewed, it's more of a small business accounting system rather than a true accounting app for a smaller enterprise with a need for extensive multi-company or multi-nation functionality.

To be fair, Intuit doesn't really target Enterprise Solutions at those users. However, a proprietary database, a fairly low max-user limit, and a reliance on its user community for help documentation keep this system slightly behind Acumatica and Intacct, the current Editors' Choice winners in this category.

QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise uses an Intuit-proprietary database and scalability is limited to just 30 simultaneous users. This is a serious limitation when the other vendors' apps reviewed can be scaled up into the hundreds or even thousands of users. On the other hand, many of those competitors, including Intacct Visit Site at Sage Intacct and NetSuite OneWorld are intended to eventually grow the customer into expanding the platform to a true enterprise resource planning ERP environment.

QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise has no such goals as it's designed strictly for accounting. Intuit also offers a cloud-hosted version of QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise itself, for a slight premium over the on-premises version. Installation went quickly, with no problems.

Default entity types such as construction, nonprofit, professional services, consulting, and others are available during the install process and need to be selected to properly configure the system. Selecting a business type affects the default Chart of Accounts, and this process is exactly the same as with other versions of QuickBooks, so it'll be familiar for previous customers.

Unlike most of the other software in this roundup, you can purchase QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise directly from Intuit or through the vendor's extensive reseller network. While it's entirely possible to configure and customize QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise yourself, you may want to consider using a Certified ProAdvisor if you think you'll need extensive customization or if you think your setup might require non-standard configuration.

It's also very possible that your accountant is either a Certified ProAdvisor or works with one, given the app's widespread use, so developing a relationship along those lines could be beneficial if you think you'll be using the platform for a long time.

If you don't look closely, then it appears that QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise uses a strictly named Chart of Accounts, bereft of the familiar numbers other accounting systems employ. In reality, the account numbers are there, just not displayed by default. Under the Edit Preferences menu, there's a checkbox to "Use Numbers. And, as with other versions of QuickBooks, you can have multiple layers of sub-accounts to provide more granular tracking of the main accounts, or to set divisions or locations.

On the minus side, QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise doesn't provide true multi-company features, though you could probably rig the Chart of Accounts to kludge this. It does, however, have the capability of handling multiple currencies. Launching QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise lands you on the Home page, which is a set of process flowcharts. QuickBooks was one of the first vendors to incorporate this user interface UI , and it's become something of a standard because it greatly helps in assisting users through a process-specific series of tasks.

What's displayed on the Home page flowchart is determined by how you answer a series of questions during setup. The test company I used for these reviews included three horizontal tiers: Vendors on top, Employee tasks on bottom, and Customer tasks in the middle layer. Specific tasks are included or excluded depending on whether you use the feature.

For example, if you don't use a customer statement, then an icon to perform this particular task won't be shown though you can add it at a later time. Two additional vertical panes on the right-hand side contained Company and Banking tasks. Additional navigation is provided by a top ribbon bar, and a vertical menu bar on the left-most screen edge, which can be hidden if you wish.

All of the accounting apps I reviewed offered some sort of dashboard.
